Breaking the Mould Series - Webinar 1 Research and Practice

The breaking the mould series is a new series of webinars for new and early career researchers. They provide a space to be inspired by the way in which people use new and original research, and will start discussions ahead of the SRHE Newer Researchers Conference on the 5th December 2017

Two speakers will discuss the way in which research and practice can come together to shape innovation in higher education, reflecting on their own experiences and careers.  This is followed by our Newer Researchers spotlight, where a PhD student will share their current research and reflect on the ways their research could respond to the theme and discussion of the webinar.
 
This is the first of three monthly webinars in the run up to the conference, and will focus on discussing the role of research and practice. 

This month’s webinar features the following contributors:
 
Anne-Marie Canning is the Director of Social Mobility and Student Success at King’s College London. In this role, she provides leadership and strategic direction for full-lifecycle widening participation across the institution. Anne-Marie is a member of the Universities UK Social Mobility Ministerial Advisory Group and recently served as Chair of the Russell Group Widening Participation Association.

Anne-Marie will talk about the KCLxBIT project and how randomised control trials have been used to boost engagement for widening participation learners at King’s College London. Follow at @amcanning
 
Samuel Dent is a project manager in the University Secretary’s Office at the University of Sheffield, leading strategic research projects, (such as the forthcoming HEFCE funded project Should I stay or Should I go? exploring student demand for mobility and credit transfer), and research-informed change projects looking at issues such as BME attainment gaps (see: www.raratutor.ac.uk). Samuel is also an early career researcher, in the final stages of his PhD in Higher Education at Sheffield Institute of Education, on the experiences of students who care for children while studying.
 
Samuel’s talk discusses the ways in which ‘wicked issues’ in practice have shaped and influenced his research interests, how these interests have motivated him and, thereby, impacted and shaped his career. Follow at @SRDent89

Carli Ria Rowell is an ESRC doctoral researcher in the Department of Sociology at the University of Warwick exploring ethnographically the experiences of first generation working class students at an elite U.K. University. Carli talk will explore some of the findings from her doctoral thesis, especially the impact of elite higher education upon ones relationships with 'non-educationally mobile' friends and family.
