Conceptualising and developing critical thinking in and beyond the academy: International student perspectives

Andrew Drybrough, PhD research student, University of Edinburgh

This presentation follows research on 20 international PGT students (including 8 mainland Chinese students) based on how their critical thinking skills had developed prior to and during a masters, and how they perceived these skills to be of use in the future. The simple stereotype of Chinese educational cultural background affecting prior understanding of critical thinking in a negative way was challenged. Students, no matter what their educational background, all had varying understandings of critical thinking. The responsibility should therefore be on the educators of PGT students, as well as on students themselves, to develop their critical thinking abilities during their masters and beyond.

Early career researchers networking in international contexts: issues and perspectives.

Dr. Donatella Camedda, The University of Edinburgh (co-authors Ana Mirman Flores, University of Seville, Ashling Ryan-Mangan, Trinity College Dublin)

Networking is becoming increasingly recognised as a vital component of the lifelong learning process, especially during the early stages of the academic career (Coromina et al. 2011; Capó Artigues et al., 2007). This research project investigated motivations and expectations of an international cohort of emerging researchers that participated in targeted activities, such as summer schools, in relation to social and academic networking. This presentation would offer an overview of issues related to networking of emerging researchers with their peers and established scholars, within internationalised contexts in higher education.
