Newer Researchers Network

Convenors:
Dr Arwen Raddon, Centre for Labour Market Studies, University of Leicester
Patrick Baughan, City University London

Newer Researchers
This SRHE network is for individuals who consider themselves as ‘newer researchers’ in the field of higher education. We appreciate the broad range of career paths that newer higher education researchers have followed and our membership and activities aim to embrace this diversity. The network is aimed at:
  • postgraduate students (including full time and part time)
  • postdoctoral and early career researchers
  • newer academics from a range of disciplinary backgrounds
  • researchers newer to carrying out research in the field of HE
Essentially, if you consider yourself a newer researcher in higher education, and would like to be involved in the network’s activities, then you are welcome to join.

Our aim is to provide opportunities for new researchers to develop links with national and international peers, share their developing research and build capacity as researchers within a supportive research community.

Activities
Our activities include: * Network events will be publicised on these pages

Free Network Membership to SRHE Members
If you would like to become a member of the Network please email the SRHE office at srheoffice@srhe.ac.uk. Please note that Network events are free to SRHE members.

Ideas And Suggestions
Likewise, if you have any suggestions or ideas for the network, such as activities that you feel would be particularly beneficial in supporting the early career stages, please contact us on the email above.

Event: Generating theory from your research: A workshop for newer researchers
The purpose of this interactive event is to help newer researchers consider how they can generate theory from their research: a key skill for the newer researcher. We are delighted to have Dr Linda Evans from the University of Leeds acting as facilitator for this session. As well as being invaluable for early career researchers, supervisors may wish to recommend this session for their students.

This workshop is aimed at demonstrating to early career researchers how they may deepen the analysis that they apply to their research in order to incorporate theory and theoretical perspectives. This will be an interactive session: attendees will participate in activities directed at enhancing their understanding of theory and of how it may be applied to their work. Linda will discuss what is meant by ‘theory’ and how the term is understood. She will introduce some of her own theoretical work and will engage participants in an example process of formulating a theoretical model.

The author of five books, including Reflective Practice in Educational Research: Developing Advanced Skills, Linda Evans is an experienced qualitative researcher and teacher of research methods. She has been Reader in Education at the University of Leeds since 2007, having previously worked at Warwick University. Her work is located in the social sciences and this workshop will be particularly useful to others working in the various subjects that make up this discipline; those working in arts and humanities may also find it useful. The workshop will be equally useful to those working on empirical and non-empirical research studies.

The Newer Researchers’ Network
This workshop is part of the SRHE Newer Researchers’ Network activities. The NR Network aims to provide opportunities for networking and capacity-building for those newer to researching higher education, including postgraduate students, postdoctoral and early career researchers, and researchers from other backgrounds who are newer to carrying out research in the field of HE. We also organise the annual SRHE Postgraduate and Newer Researcher Conference (PGNR), a dedicated space for newer researchers, held directly prior to the 3-day SRHE annual conference. Join our mailing list to keep up to date with NR Network activities, and receive details of the 2010 PGNR conference, send your contact details to Carol Salmon: csalmon@srhe.ac.uk.
