Higher Education in India: Institutional and Social Hierarchies

Wednesday, 10 October 2018

This is the first event to mark the International Research and Researchers Network’s new biennial theme, ‘hierarchies in international higher education’. Focusing on the Indian country context, the speakers for this event address hierarchies across the Indian higher education sector. Although Indian higher education is in a phase of massification – a sheer explosion in the number of institutions – and it is a significant exporter and more recently importer of international students, India has not received sufficient attention in the field of international higher education research. The speakers in this event demystify the Indian higher education system and explain some of the policy initiatives that have shaped the higher education landscape. An event on Indian higher education would not be complete without analysis of social hierarchies in Indian society, particularly relating to gender and caste, and how these hierarchies play out in an ever-expanding higher education sector. Finally, a lively panel discussion is planned where lived experiences of different institutional types are discussed from a comparative perspective, to bring this fascinating context to life.
