Employability: Perceptions of Chinese students in different global contexts

Finding a good job is hard, but…….: Chinese Graduates from Australia Tell it All

Chinese international students seek international education primarily to add value and improve their employment opportunities. The recent trend shows that Chinese international students are returning home to seek employment. Little is known on La Trobe Chinese graduates’ employability experiences and their employment prospects in China. Therefore, this research seeks to understand and explore the employment experiences of Chinese La Trobe Alumni with a particular focus on 1) What are the influential factors in attaining their first and subsequent jobs in China? Due to the paucity of research on this topic and also the nature of the study, a qualitative method was adopted in this project. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted in China (Beijing and Shanghai) in August – September 2017 with 19 Chinese La Trobe alumni. This project contributes to the empirical understanding of the employment trends of Chinese graduates upon repatriating to China.

Dr Singh’s expertise is in higher education with a particular interest on international students and has published journal papers and presented at numerous higher education conferences in Malaysia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Thailand, Japan and Australia. In 2017, Dr Singh received a grant from the China Studies Research Centre to explore the employability experiences of La Trobe alumni in China. In 2016, Dr Singh received a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) grant from the La Trobe Learning and Teaching Office. The grant sets to explore undergraduate international students' experiences at La Trobe in a blended learning environment. Dr Singh is a member of ACEN and IEAA and a reviewer for the Malaysian Bulletin of Higher Education as well as the Higher Education Research and Development Journal (HERD). In 2018, Dr Singh has been appointed as the fellow Researcher at the Malaysian National Higher Education Research Institute. Besides research, Dr Singh also has extensive Australian teaching experiences at La Trobe, Monash and Melbourne University where she has taught range of Management subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Currently, Dr Singh is employed as an Early Career Development Fellow at the Department of Management, Sport and Tourism, La Trobe University. 

Chinese international students perceptions of their employability in an English University

Employability is becoming an integral part of higher education in public policy in this decade, and it has been a concept of interest for researchers in recent years.

Most research data concerning students’ self-perceived employability were collected using questionnaire surveys and analysed quantitatively focusing on factors relating to students’ perceptions of employability. Research on employability with undergraduate and postgraduate Chinese students has been the main focus of Chinese research, focusing on labour market demand or considering employment itself. There has been a lack of attention paid to international students’ perception of employability in UK during their postgraduate study.

This study developing a nuanced understanding of the ‘internal’ and ‘external’ aspect in self-perceived employability. Stimulated Recall (SR) interview method is used to explore students’ intentions for study and their current perceptions of employability.

This talk will outline how human reflexivity informs this study; and show the consistency between this framework and the stimulated recall interview approach.
