East Asian Research Collaborations Network: new forms of internationalisation

Wednesday, 18 March 2015

The Faculty of Education at the University of Hull is establishing a research network which seeks to promote collaboration and stimulate research on ‘New Forms of Internationalisation’ in Higher Education. This network aims to establish and foster international research collaborations between research intensive institutions and leading academics in the UK, Europe and East and South East Asia (for a detailed summary of the aims and scope of this network please see attached document).

This one-day research and networking event marks the launch of this network. This event will be attended by established UK, European and East and South East Asian scholars, early career researchers and PhD students and will be a stimulating platform for discussing emerging forms of internationalisation. The aim is to develop future pathways for collaborative research between European and East and South East Asian academics.

Keynote address:

Higher education and science in emerging East Asia: Challenges for UK universities
Professor Simon Marginson (UCL, Institute of Education)

ABSTRACT: The talk will outline the extraordinary dynamism of school-age learning, higher education and science in China, Taiwan, Korea and Singapore as well as the emerging potentials of Vietnam and SE Asia. East Asia has become the world’s third great region of education and technological innovation, joining Europe/UK and North America. There is as yet only modest awareness of East Asia in universities in the UK, a nation currently struggling to manage its international student policy and its location in Europe, let alone relations with China et al. The level of UK research collaboration into East Asia is lower than in the other English-speaking countries. While there is a danger that the UK will be left behind, there are also immense possibilities for exciting new developments in cross-border education and research.
