This highly topical seminar explores issues raised by UK higher education and immigration policies for international students, home students and the HE sector as a whole. Two papers will be presented: Dr Richard Race ( University of Roehampton)
International and domestic perspectives on Master’s level delivery Dr Race focuses on postgraduate education in a context in which masters level courses often rely on international students to keep them viable. This paper considers the consequences of a refocus on international students’ needs for postgraduate students and academic staff and as well as the extent to which the skills offered are transferable into international contexts. Recent policy recommendations from the Higher Education Commission will also be discussed. Dr Terri Kim (University of East London) Immigration policies, academic citizenship, and the boundaries of inclusion and exclusion inside academe Dr Kim offers a critical review of the inter-relationships between three policies – the internationalisation policy (as the marketisation of HE), widening participation in HE policy (as social engineering), and the more recently introduced point-based immigration policy. Her analysis explores changing boundaries of inclusion and non-inclusion inside academe, the possibilities of a new type of knowledge creation and the limits of interculturality in UK higher education. Tea and coffee will be available at 4pm and the event will start at 4.15. After each paper there will be time for questions and discussion, followed by an opportunity to discuss issues raised in both papers over a glass of wine or juice.
