SRHE Newer Researchers Award winners presentations

Tuesday, 04 October 2016

This is an opportunity to hear our two 2014 award winners present their papers.  It will also be an opportunity to ask questions about the SRHE Newer Researchers Award, applications for which opens in December 2016.

Dr Philippa Sheail from the University of Edinburgh was awarded the 2014 SRHE Newer Researchers Prize for her study entitled
"Global gatherings and digital divides: internationalisation and the digital in higher education"
This SRHE funded project enabled Philippa to pursue a critical exploration of the relationship between internationalisation and the digital in higher education, considering how higher education institutions are made international (after Lin and Law 2013), both physically and digitally. The project aims to open up new ways of thinking about internationalisation and the digital for a range of academic and non-academic university practitioners.
Dr Ye Liu from Bath Spa University (now at King's College, London) was awarded the 2014 SRHE Newer Researchers Prize for her study entitled

"When Choices Become Chances: Extending Boudon’s Secondary Effects Theory to Analyse Social Reproduction Through University Choices in Contemporary China"

This study extends Boudon’s positional theory to understand different patterns of university choices in contemporary China. This study provides new evidence on a pattern of class-bound conformity in contrast to the rational course of action from students’ narratives on economic, opportunity and culture risks. It also highlights geographical inequality in the opportunity structure of higher education as an uncomfortable making of legitimised and institutionalised discrimination against those from poor regions.
